Background of the Study
In today’s digital era, safeguarding customer data and securing online transactions are paramount to building trust in banking. Citibank Nigeria has implemented significant online security protocol enhancements to protect its digital platforms from cyber threats and to instill confidence among its customers. These enhancements include multi-factor authentication, end-to-end encryption, real-time threat monitoring, and regular security audits (Ugochukwu, 2023). The upgraded security measures are designed to counter increasingly sophisticated cyber-attacks, ensuring that customers’ financial information remains secure while they conduct transactions online. By reinforcing its digital infrastructure, Citibank Nigeria aims to mitigate risks associated with fraud and data breaches, which are critical for maintaining customer trust and loyalty.

The bank’s approach integrates advanced security technologies with comprehensive employee training and customer education initiatives. This multifaceted strategy not only improves the detection and prevention of cyber threats but also enhances the overall user experience by reducing transaction friction. Research has demonstrated that robust online security protocols are directly linked to increased customer trust and higher adoption rates of digital banking services (Okeke, 2024). However, despite these advancements, challenges remain in ensuring that security enhancements do not overly complicate the user experience. Balancing high security with ease of access is essential to ensure that customers remain confident in the bank’s digital channels. Citibank Nigeria’s initiative represents a proactive step toward establishing a secure online banking environment, and its effectiveness in building customer trust warrants thorough examination in the current cybersecurity landscape.

Statement of the Problem
Although Citibank Nigeria has implemented enhanced online security protocols, customer trust issues persist due to occasional system complexities and usability challenges. Some customers report difficulties navigating the multi-factor authentication process, leading to frustration and reluctance to use digital channels (Chukwu, 2024). Furthermore, integration challenges between new security measures and legacy systems have resulted in intermittent technical glitches, undermining the overall security perception. These issues are compounded by the evolving nature of cyber threats, which demand continuous updates and adaptations. Consequently, despite significant investments in security, the gap between enhanced protocols and user-friendly experiences remains a concern. This study seeks to investigate whether the online security protocol enhancements are effectively building customer trust and to identify the operational and technological barriers that limit their success. The findings will help develop strategies to streamline security measures while maintaining robust protection, thereby enhancing overall customer satisfaction and trust in digital banking.
